The requirement to copy music neatly and indeed write out music by hand has recently been removed from ABRSM Theory exams grades 1 to 5 with the introduction of  Online Assessments in 2021.

However, questions may be set on spotting deliberate mistakes for which the following should be noted.

Notes in spaces should fit exactly between the lines with no overlap

Notes on lines should have the line going through the middle of the note and occupy exactly half the spaces either side of the line.

The stems of high notes (above the middle line) go down on the left. The stems of low notes (below the middle line) go up on the right.

When drawing tails on the stems for quavers or semiquavers they always curve on the right hand side.
